Research on Contaminant Distribution Measurement and Condition Analysis for Runway Surfaces

Recent years have seen us encounter rapid snow accumulations due to abnormal weather conditions, including snow storms in winter. Periodic runway inspections are conducted by airport operators to measure the surface friction generated by inspection vehicles and any accumulated snow is removed to ensure runway safety. Additionally, a reporting obligation is imposed on the landing pilot to announce the runway condition codes. The critical factor determining the code is to ensure the thickness of the contaminant exceeds 1/8 inch (3mm). We are developing a system to measure the thickness and distribution of the contaminant.

Infrared lasers and cameras detect ice, snow and water on the runway.
